Chris Martin's band have been nominated for seven of the prestigious musical honours, including best rock album and song of the year.

They lead a British-only shortlist for record of the year with Adele, X Factor winner Leona Lewis and MIA also vying for the trophy.

Former Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant gets a nomination alongside American bluegrass star Alison Krauss.

Performances

Plant and Krauss' album Raising Sand is also in the running for best contemporary folk album.

Close behind Coldplay in the nominations are Radiohead, whose album In Rainbows is up for five awards including album of the year and best alternative album.

The band's producer Nigel Godrich is also nominated for an award recognising his work on the record.

Last year, Amy Winehouse won five Grammys despite not being able to travel to the US to accept them.

She performed for the audience via a satellite link.

This year, US rapper Lil Wayne has the most nominations, eight in total, for his album Tha Carter III.

The Grammys ceremony is taking place held at Staples Centre in downtown Los Angeles, and will feature a number of performances from artists including MIA - whose baby is also due today.
