Who's Hotter: Bipasha Basu and John Abraham or Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie?

Posted by: shilpz in , , , , , , , ,

There's a lot of debate out there about who's hot and who's not. Usually we just wind up talking about those sexy couples that we can't get enough of in Bollywood or Hollywood. But even we have to admit that every once in a while there's a couple that you just can't help but stare at when you see them toge

ther. The fact that two exceptionally attractive people come togeth

er seems kind of unfair, but at least we still get to judge the level of their hotness. So we were sitting around thinking, "Are Bipasha Basu and John Abraham hotter than Brad Pitt and AngelinaJolie?"

They are both undeniably successful couples who have done

well for themselves and joined forces to create an unstoppable force. There are even some similarities, starting with the fact that they're all actors. Also, both couples are unmarried, which is still somewhat culturally frowned upon for Bipasha Basu and John Abraham, more so than it is for Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. And there is no denying that both of the people involved that make up these couples are sex symbols in their own right. As for Bipasha Basu and John Abraham, they both seem to be

very health focused and love to exercise. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie seem to be more baby-focused and are notorious for their willingness to continue to adopt, which set off a mini-trend as seen with Madonna.

It's a toss-up and kind of difficult to say that one is better than the o

ther,

or is it? The couples are sexy, young, and taking the Bollywood and Hollywood film industries by storm. So we want to turn over this oh-so difficult question to our readers. Do you think Bipasha Basu and John Abraham are hotter or do you think that no one can match the level of hotness that is Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie? Leave us your comments on these sexy couples.

Imran Khan to Perform in 'Vagina Monologues'

Posted by: shilpz in , , , ,

Rising actor Imran Khan, who just won the coveted Best New Actor trophy at the Filmfare Awards, is finally fulfilling his desire to work in theatre. Film actors doing theatre is of course not

new concept, but the play that he will be featured in is quite controversial and will prove to be groundbreaking. You see, Imran will be seen in Eve Ensler's 'Vagina Monologues.' If you haven't already heard of the famous play, I'm pretty sure that title alone caught your attention! Now the play written by Eve Ensler is hitting Mumbai and will be directed by Mahabanoo Mody-

Kotwal.

The 'Vagina Monologues' is a series of monologues read by female actors and the reoccurring theme is using the vagina as a means of female empowerment. Now for the first time in history since the play was first written in 1996, a male actor will be rendering a monologue. Imran Khan will read the piece, 'My Short Skirt' which was also read by Mallika Sherawat a few years back. But don't worry, Imran won't be rocking a mini, since it's pretty ridiculous to have a man read a piece on about female sexual organ, Imran will read the piece while a female actor will act it out on stage.

So how did Imran Khan get involved in the project? Well turns out

his friend Sonali Sachdev who is in the play herself inspired him to be a part of it. Imran hopes with his role in the play that more men will be drawn to the female oriented play. However, the best part of it all has to be the fact that the proceeds will go towards creating awareness towards violence against women and helping those who have been victims of violence. In fact, a young lady named Haseena, a victim of an acid attack in 1999, is expected to attend the play.

While it may sound a little quirky and offbeat, I find it honorable that Imran Khan is a part of the play, but I'd like to know what you think! What are your thoughts on Imran being the first m

an to ever be a part of the 'Vagina Monologues'? Leave your comments below.

Smile Pinki wins Oscar Award

Posted by: shilpz in , , , , , , , ,

Crackers were burst and sweets distributed in Uttar Pradesh's Rampur Dabai village Monday as "Smile Pinki", a documentary about a girl from the dusty hamlet whose cleft lip made her a social outcast, won an Oscar.

As American filmmaker Megan Mylan received the award for best short documentary in Los Angeles, residents of the village in Mirzapur district turned ecstatic.

Nirmala Devi, the mother of the film's protagonist Pinki Sonkar, was proud that her daughter's shy smile had managed to woo the jury of the 81st Academy Awards.

Hundreds of villagers, carrying cutouts of Pinki and raising slogans in praise of the little girl who was once ostracised because of her cleft lip, lined up outside Nirmala Devi's small hut to congratulate her.

"It's an honour for all of us that a poor girl has put this village on the international map," village head Pradeep Vishwakarma told IANS on phone.

"We were overjoyed when we saw on news channels that the documentary on Pinki had won an important award," he added.

Legislator Anil Kumar Maurya said: "Pinki has made not only Rampur Dabai village, but the entire country proud. She has achieved a feat which most of us had not even imagined."

The 39-minute documentary traces Pinki's journey from being ostracised to being treated like a normal girl after a social worker helped her undergo surgery.

Mylan says the happy ending inspired her to show Pinki's story.

"As a filmmaker who focuses on social issue documentaries, it is rare that I get into a film knowing we're likely to have a happy ending. So, I was excited to tell the story of this beautiful hospital and a team of doctors and social workers treating their patients with such compassion and quality care and making a positive impact," said Mylan.

A R Rehman wins 2 Oscar Awards

Posted by: shilpz in , , , ,

God Save Rahman. That's what Allah Rakha Rahman means. And that's what the country said Monday for the man who became the first Indian music director to win two Oscars for his score in the globally appreciated film "Slumdog Millionaire" and for the film's theme song "Jai Ho".

Rahman, a household name in India for his contribution to Bollywood, as well as regional cinema from the south, has been the cynosure of all ears since 1992 when he burst on the Indian musical scene with his refreshingly different tunes for the Tamil film "Roja".

The film was subsequently made in Hindi, giving mainstream Hindi film music a new meaning altogether: the rest as they say is history.

He has moved on from being a celebrated composer in India to a global music supernova who has entered the record books as the first Indian to get a Golden Globe, the first Indian to get the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) award for music and the first Indian to bag a golden Oscar statuette.

With "Slumdog Millionaire", Danny Boyle's rags to riches drama based on a book by Indian diplomat Vikas Swarup, the 41-year-old Rahman has stuck gold - and so has India and Indian music.

The film had 10 Oscar nominations, including three for Rahman - he was nominated for Best Original Score and two for the Best Original Song for a motion picture with his songs "Jai Ho" and "O Saaya". It was another first for an Indian.

For India, the "Slumdog" awards story, which some say is as improbable as the film itself about an 18-year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai who goes on to win a staggering Rs.20 million ($410,000) on India's "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" game show, is not just about the BAFTAs and the Oscars.

It is also recognition of popular Indian cinema in the West that for long has shunned Indian movies as too long and too full of song-and-dance sequences. Rahman's exuberant score has shattered all those perceptions, and shown that the West likes the sound of India.

"It's a moment of pride not just for me. India has done it," Rahman said modestly.

Composing music for British director Danny Boyle was a challenge, said the self-effacing celebrity.

Boyle simply wanted a score with energy and an edge for his film. There was also a twist. The perfectionist Rahman was given just three weeks to plan and execute the score.

"We had met and talked about it for about two months. But I had to finish it quickly as Boyle wanted to start mixing the film by August," Rahman told IANS in an interview.

"It's probably one-fifth of the time I normally take. For one thing, a normal film has about 150 cues. But in this one there were only 17-18 cues for me. Boyle uses music very little but very efficiently," he added.

Like the film's protagonist Jamal, Rahman's is also an inspiring story of the everyday struggle for survival that has ended on the glittering red carpets of showbiz.

Born A.S. Dileep Kumar to a Tamil Hindu family, his father R.K. Shekhar, a composer who directed music for Malayalam movies, died when he was just nine. The family was forced to rent out musical equipment. Two years later, the 11-year-old budding maestro joined noted composer Ilayaraja's troupe as a keyboardist and computer programmer to support his mother and three sisters.

After working with several renowned composers like Vishwanathan-Ramamurthy, Zakir Hussain and L. Shankar, he set out on his own to compose jingles and scores for popular Indian television features and has composed more than 300 jingles.

During this period, he also earned a degree in western classical music from the Trinity College of Music, London and went on to set up his own in-house studio called Panchathan record-inn at Chennai, which is said to be Asia's most sophisticated and hi-tech studio.

In 1989, Dileep Kumar converted to Islam along with his family due to personal reasons. He became A.R. Rahman.

The Bollywood debut came a couple of years later. And there was no looking back after that.

In 1997, Sony Music signed up Rahman as its first artist in South Asia to commemorate 50 years of Indian Independence. The result was "Vande Mataram", the anthem of Indian patriotism, an album that succeeded in rekindling the nationalistic spirit and was an instant hit with Indian youth.

The musical genius not only won hearts in India but also made a mark on the global music scene.

He got his first international break when Andrew Lloyd Webber invited him to compose music for the Broadway musical "Bombay Dreams", which won him immense fame.

He also composed for the stage adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's "Lord Of The Rings" that premiered in Canada in 2006 and in London in 2007.

Apart from composing music Rahman is also involved in social work. He launched the A.R. Rahman Foundation to tackle the issue of poverty by providing education to the poor and equipping them with knowledge and skills to earn a living.

An outcome of this initiative was his first single in the English language called "Pray for me brother" and all proceeds from sales went to his foundation.

As the awards pile up, Indians can only say a collective and joyous "Jai Ho".

Delhi 6 Review

Posted by: shilpz in , , , ,

Delhi 6 ReviewMovie Review: Delhi 6; Star Cast: Abhishek Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, Om Puri and Waheeda Rehman; Director: Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra; Rating: *** - Is worth a watch.

Delhi 6 is a delightful musical run through the Hindu and Muslim cultures of Old Delhi as seen through the eyes of protagonist Roshan (Abhishek Bachchan) who comes to India to fulfill the desire of his terminally ill Daadi (Waheeda Rehman) to spend the last days of her life in her hometown. As Roshan after a brief culture shock, tries to understand the complexities of relations that kept his people apart from each other as well as close to each other, he slowly gets attached to Bittu (Sonam Kapoor) and the chemistry grows, which is very convincingly directed using rich background music and believable day-to-day situations.

The first half, though appearing a little lengthy focuses on reverse-culture-shock jokes, lavishly reproduced Ram Leela, a visit to the Taj Mahal, and a cow giving birth in the street. It is in the second half that things take a more serious turn. Unwelcome traditions and smoldering religious hatred comes bubbling to the surface and erupt into a Do the Right Thing climax that takes everyone by surprise. Several characters and subplots weaved together to relate to the central plot of analyzing beliefs against rational thinking, with a touch of humor is quite entertaining but one has to endure the laborious and forced accent of Abhishek Bachchan throughout the movie. Although at several places, the movie seems predictable, Mehra succeeds in putting surprises well in time and balance. The climax gets dragged due to cameos and voiceovers. Although Roshan’s attempts to put belief and trust in people ahead of belief in customs and religion deserve a pat, what disappoints is Mehra getting preachy at many places. Rahman’s soulful music takes the film to a completely different level altogether.

Mehra and his cameraman Binod Pradhan have succeeded in capturing the buzz of Delhi city very well in every frame. Those living outside of India will find that connect with that feeling of wanting to be in both places. The song in the second half which juxtaposes Abhishek’s life in the US with the people and life in India is beautifully done as well. Hat’s off to the director and technical team there.

Abhishek has delivered one of his better performances but his American accent doesn’t really work. Sonam Kapoor doesn’t have much to do but except for the climax but she carries herself immensely well. Waheeda Rehman, Om Puri and Rishi Kapoor are simply outstanding. The huge ensemble cast comprising of acclaimed actors such as Raghubir Yadav, Pavan Malhotra, Supriya Pathak Shah, Deepak Dobriyal, Divya Dutta, Vijay Raaz, Tanvi Azmi and Atul Kulkarni do a wonderful job.

Just look at the diversity of topics addressed convincingly through brilliant performances and slick editing, you will realize why I say it’s worth a watch

Mahesh Bhatt claims to be a copycat

Posted by: shilpz in , , , , , ,

Mahesh BhattA panel discussion at FICCI Frames had an interesting debate titled ‘Cut Copy Paste To Indian Taste’ that was attended by leading Bollywood names such as Dibakar Banerjee, Rohan Sippy, Imtiaz Ali, Kabir Khan and Mahesh Bhatt.

The buzz is that this almost became a wrestling match.

Seasoned writer-director Mahesh Bhatt without any remorse made a confession,

He apparently said, “I’m a thief, every word or phrase that I use has been lifted or sourced from some other place. I want to make a living what is your problem.”

The self confessed spokesperson of the industry is mighty bold but obviously this comment didn’t go well with many.

Kabeer Khan said, “How long can you get away with stealing? Now the foreign studios are here, they will sue you from here to eternity.”

Imtiaz Ali rightly said, “The topic is itself not an original idea and by the end of it we will get into a wrestling match.”

People who support this concept lke David Dhawan, Sanjay Gupta, Sajid Khan and many others are still in business.

This sure is a debate which will go on for a long, long time in B-Town

Slumdog kidsChild artistes Mohammed Azharuddin’s and Rubina Ali are getting their passports done and visas done for their visit to the Oscars.

The Slumdog kids, as they are known these days, are supposed to go to Los Angeles for the Oscars.

Rubina has said, “Not in my dreams did I ever think that I will go to America. I have to buy clothes and shoes for the award ceremony.”

Azhar has added, “Even I would not have ever thought this but I am really happy. I have to thank Danny uncle as I am going to America.”

They have been assured of their passports but the Visa formalities are yet to be settled and it remains to be seen whether these kids can actually make it to the Oscars or not.

Meanwhile the controversy surrounding the compensation given to the child actors for the film continues. Producer Christian Colson says that the family was given money from a fund set up to build a new home but the parents deny it.

Azhar’s father Mohammed Ismail, a TB patient says, “Just provide us with a house, we don’t want any car or money.”

We hope there’ll indeed be a brighter tomorrow for these kids post the Oscars.

Freida Pinto secretly married ex in Goa

"Slumdog Millionaire" star Freida Pinto, who recently broke up with her boyfriend of four years Rohan Antao, may have secretly married her ex two years back.

The Indian actress was said to have called off her engagement to Rohan Jan 15, but Britain's Daily Telegraph says that the couple clandestinely wed in Goa in 2007 deciding to keep the marriage under wraps to give Freida a greater chance of winning film roles.

"Freida and Rohan fell in love at college and were extremely close. They were great together. The marriage was an impulsive decision and both of them went to a designer to get the gown made," a source close to the couple was quoted as saying by contactmusic.com.

The source added: "Rohan was with her throughout her years as an actress when she was not at all famous. He supported her during the filming of 'Slumdog?' and the pair even celebrated the film's success at the Toronto Film Festival together last year."

"However, she just stopped calling him around the time of the Golden Globe awards, when the film started to make waves internationally. He is completely shocked at being dumped and is heartbroken."

Freida Pinto Has a Secret Husband

'Slumdog Millionaire' star Freida Pinto is reportedly secretly married to her beau Rohan Antao. Who knew?! Apparently Pinto was "engaged" to him, but called off the engagement last week. But Britain's Daily Telegraph alleges that the couple actually wed in Goa, India in 2007. They kept their marriage under wraps because it gave Pinto a greater chance of winning film roles. They were right about that! And her presence at the Academy Awards later this month is proof. Now that her movie career has blossomed, she's considering filing for divorce because she doesn't have time for a relationship. A source tells the publication, "Freida and Rohan fell in love at college and were extremely close. They were great together. The marriage was an impulsive decision and both of them went to a designer to get the gown made. "Rohan was with her throughout her years as an actress when she was not at all famous. He supported her during the filming of Slumdog and the pair even celebrated the film's success at the Toronto Film Festival together last year. "However, she just stopped calling him around the time of the Golden Globes awards, when the film started to make waves internationally. He is completely shocked at being dumped and is heartbroken." Guess it's true when they fame changes you. Maybe she just fell out of love? Does your opinion of her change now that you know she was secretly married?
