Intel and AMD to power PS4, Xbox 720, and WiiII?

Posted by: shilpz in , , , , , ,

A little creative thinking over at the Inquirer has led them to suggest that Nvidia may get left out in the cold come the new generation of gaming consoles. Intel and AMD are set to split the spoils between them, leaving Nvidia (in its glory and its ego) to play with the PC market, which, as we are constantly being reminded, is dying.

It seems that there’s some bad blood between Sony and Nvidia, and some insiders have said that the GPU contract has gone over to Intel. Kind of puts the lid back on Nvidia’s can of whoop-ass. Similarly, Microsoft may be switching to AMD GPUs for grudge-related reasons. The Wii2, or WII, or Wiii, or Twii, will likely be sporting AMD hardware because ATI has been Nintendo’s partner for a while.

Add into this the fact that AMD is probably making rock-bottom bids right about now due to the fact that if they don’t make some money they’re going to be counting their stock’s value in pennies — on their hands. I’d certainly like to see a comeback like this.

Sleepachu kawaii overload

Ah, late Winter — that time when a young trainer’s fancy turns to a sleeping shock-mouse. Believe it or not, that’s actually the proverb in Japan, and is the mythical inspiration for theSleeping Pikachu fest being held at Pokémon centers all over Nippon.

Essentially it’s just a sale on all their goods featuring a sleeping Pikachu. And there are plenty of goods, believe me. Feel free to catch ‘em all! (You will be expected to pay for ‘em all as well)

KidRex Provides Hassle-Free Web Search Filtering for Kids

Posted by: shilpz in ,

KidRex is a kid friendly front-end for Google searches that uses Google's SafeSearch technology to filter out child-inappropriate content. It's a hassle-free tool for masking the underbelly of the internet from young searchers.

KidRex isn't as robust a solution as setting up a completely stand-alone browser with a white list like KidZui or using OpenDNS as a parental filter, but it is effective and more than adequate for preventing childhood curiosity from exposing kids to inappropriate content. Basic keyword queries that would lead a kid to wonder exactly why that girl has so many boyfriends are blocked, and the user is redirected to search again. If your eight year old nephew a robust vocabulary, however, KidRex won't be much of a challenge. Search for curvaceous and you—and Junior—will find out that there is an entire magazine devoted to the implications of the word. In any case, if you'd like to be able to help a young-in research for a school report about cougars without having a conversation about the birds, the bees, and the economy of southern California, KidRex will provide more than adequate filtering.

BYU Says Video Games Are Very, Very, Very Bad For You

Posted by: shilpz in , ,

Just as some new research has come out suggesting that there's no causal link between video games and real world violence, wouldn't you know that some researchers at Brigham Young University would put out a report claiming that video games are bad for you in many, many different ways. Game Politics notes that it's no coincidence this report is coming out just as the state of Utah is looking to introduce new legislation regulating video games (just like regulations that have wasted tax payer money and been thrown out in state after state after state).

This study didn't focus on violence, necessarily, but looked at a variety of different factors between gamers and non-gamers and found out that video gamers came out worse on every single factor. So, according to the study, gamers have worse relationships with friends and family, lower self-esteem, and... they're more likely to smoke pot. At least the study's author preached a bit of moderation in response:
Everything we found associated with video games came out negative... [But] I don't want parents to go out and yank all video games. It's like TV.

We have to choose what's good and bad and practice moderation.
Could have been worse... but the results still seem pretty questionable.
